Backyard Harvest

[a new opportunity]

Backyard Harvest is an innovative food rescue and gardening project that combats hunger by connecting low income families, seniors, and other food insecure residents with fresh, locally grown produce from the abundance of backyard gardens. Backyard gardeners, fruit growers, and farmers commit to “grow a row” for the hungry, then share their backyard bounty and extra produce, fruit, or eggs to help increase the access our community has to fresh, healthy food.

This program is run in partnership with the Gunnison Country Food Pantry.

                                                                   WHY?

We highlight the impact small vegetable gardens, residential fruit trees, and urban chicken coops can have on a community's food system—providing thousands of pounds of high-quality, fresh food for neighbors to share. When communities can meet their own food needs, local food systems are supported and people are less reliant on fossil fuels for the transportation and packaging of food. Growing, tending, preparing, preserving, and sharing food build community by engaging people of all ages, ethnicities, and socio-economic backgrounds, and strengthens our community's sense of common purpose and fellowship.

HOW IT WORKS

1. Gardeners sign up to be part of the Backyard Harvest program. Our coordinator makes one site visit and registers the garden. Gardeners in the program commit to using only organic growing methods. We can provide some seeds to get you started. You can sign up and/or donate at any time.

  1. 2. Our coordinator makes one weekly pick up from gardeners. You can harvest your own produce and leave it in a cooler for us to pick up,  OR, you can elect for our team to harvest the food that you would like to donate.  Food donations may also be brought to our office, 202 E Georgia Ave in Gunnison.

3. Volunteers  aggregate food donations and assist in distribution to targeted recipients: individual households, Senior Meals, Assisted Living, Food Pantry, and others.
