An Opportunity for Growth and Service

Located on a public park adjacent to the Mountain View Senior Apartments and only one block away from the Gunnison Food Pantry and Public Health Building, the Bill’s Park Giving Garden is a new opportunity to serve the seniors and low-income residents of our community. The park land is owned by the City of Gunnison, the garden is managed by Mountain Roots. The City  provides water, fencing materials, soil amendments, and other in-kind services and materials; Mountain Roots provides a plot manager, programming, oversight, technical support, and coordination. Seniors and low-income residents will get recreational, social, therapeutic opportunities as well as fresh , organically grown food.

  1. Plots

  2. We have eight  3 x 8 raised beds available for seasonal rental. The cost is $35 /year and includes water.  A sliding scale from $0 to $35 is available for low-income residents. All gardeners participate in a combined pre-season, mid-season, and end-of-season workday, and agree to contribute to the care of shared resources such as the compost bin, watering, walkways, etc. Seniors and low income residents are given first choice of plots.

2014 Expansion

By 2013 we’d outgrown the existing six raised beds and the City agreed to convert a much larger area of grass to sustainable agriculture space. An expansion of the existing Bill’s Park  garden would increase the size of the garden from the current 6 raised beds to an additional 1,750ft.² to meet the increasing need and interest from community partner organizations whose primary work is with ‘underserved’ populations: Mountain View Senior Apartment, Public Health employees and participants in the WIC/ SNAP Federal assistance programs, Gunnison Food Pantry volunteers and participants.  The City of Gunnison Parks & Recreation Dept. will continue to provide in-kind services, land, and materials. Mountain Roots will continue to provide oversight, coordination, plot management, and training. The expansion plan included additional raised beds, perennial beds, an educational or rehabilitative space, a gathering space, and more.

‘Common Ground’  Shared Plots

At the Bill’s Park Garden, we also have one 20 x 50 “Common Ground” plot.  Our Common Ground plot is a much larger area, intensively planted, and cultivated collectively by the group. This method is perfect for people who are new the gardening, who may do a lot of traveling during the growing season, who would like to learn new techniques, or who would like to enjoy higher crop yields for their effort and time. The Common Ground space is also used for workshops, classes, and leadership training. A portion of food from the Common Ground is donated.

Gardening Here

This garden is open to everyone. It is managed in partnership with the City of Gunnison, Mountain View Senior Apartments, the Gunnison Food Pantry, and Gunnison County Public Health.  Seniors in the adjacent apartments have first choice on plot rentals.  Public Health employees and their participants in programs such as WIC or SNAP, located only one block away, are also active gardeners.  In 2016, we are excited to engage several clients of the Gunnison Food Pantry.

Leadership: Plot Manager Position

We train individuals to serve in the position of   PLOT MANAGERS  for all of our gardens. Officially, this is a volunteer position, but we provide training, support, a budget for materials and supplies, and a stipend. It is our hope that with inspired leadership and community involvement, we can revitalize the space and improve the quality of life for the senior residents of Mountain View Apartments and other  low-income residents. We typically accept applications in February of each year.
