Adult Education: Cooking Matters

ABOUT

Mountain Roots is proud to be a Community Partner of Share Our Strength, a National end-hunger organization. For 20 years,  Cooking Matters  has empowered families with the skills to stretch their food budgets and cook healthy meals so their children get nutritious food at home.

As part of the No Kid Hungry campaign to end childhood hunger in America, Share Our Strength's Cooking Matters teaches participants to shop smarter, use nutrition information to make healthier choices and cook delicious, affordable meals. Founded in 1993, Cooking Matters and thousands of volunteer instructors have helped more than 120,000 low-income families in communities across the country learn how to eat better for less.

Through Cooking Matters, we enhance the dignity and joy of growing, preparing, sharing, and eating fresh, locally grown food.

OUR COOKING MATTERS (TM) COURSES

Share our Strength’s  Cooking Matters hands-on courses empower families with the skills to be self-sufficient in the kitchen.  Our participants and volunteer instructors come together each week to share lessons and meals with each other. Classes are FREE to the public and are taught in both English and Spanish.

Classes meet for two hours, once a week for six weeks and are team-taught by a volunteer chef and nutrition educator. Lessons cover meal preparation, grocery shopping, food budgeting and nutrition. Participants practice fundamental food skills, including proper knife techniques, reading ingredient labels, cutting up a whole chicken, and making a healthy meal for a family of four on a $10 budget. Adults and teens take home a bag of groceries after each class so they can practice the recipes taught that day.

SCHEDULE

Cooking Matters courses run three times per year.  Typically starting in September, January, and April .
