Elk Avenue Downtown Demonstration Garden

[2017]  We’re sad to say goodbye to the Elk Avenue Garden, which thrived for four years from 2013-2016. The owners of the lot decided to construct a building / commercial property.  They remain strong supporters of Mountain Roots and are looking forward to see what’s coming next for us! We thank them for the gift they have given us - having a storefront on Crested Butte’s main street brought visibility to the organization, beauty to the town, food the the people, and put the art of possibility front-and-center for residents and tourists alike.

The Elk Avenue Demonstration Garden was an artfully designed, interactive public site where a variety of sustainable organic growing methods and techniques that are specific to Gunnison Valley’s cold climate, soil conditions, small urban spaces,  and historic traditions are actively managed and practiced.

Located on Crested Butte’s main street, the high-visibility of the site and interpretive signage encouraged a large number of people, both residents and visitors, to observe and learn about different methods that can be replicated in their own homes or communities. Informative demonstrations, organized and self-guided tours, workshops, work days, and other activities and events on site provide residents many opportunities learn and practice a wide variety of sustainable growing methods.
