Food For Everyone

local food distribution network

We’re working to increase the availability and abundance of locally grown food in the community by “sharing the harvest” with people of all economic backgrounds. In doing so, we support economic development, link growers and consumers, support sustainable and small-scale farming, and develop a more resilient and just food system in Gunnison Valley. Mountain Roots recognizes that building Community Food Security starts with teaching a community how to meet its own food needs. We focus on efforts that engage key target groups:

  1. the Hispanic Community,

  2. Cora Indian populations,

  3. the food insecure (often low-income),

  4. seniors, youth, and the food ‘unaware’.

Food For The People helps connect the needs of these target groups with existing community resources that meet those needs, and helps to create new opportunities, resources, and relationships where needed.  We build and revitalize local community through collaboration, foster social justice, honor and celebrate diverse cultures and traditions by bringing people from different backgrounds together to work and learn in our local food system.

Fresh Food Vouchers [Booth Bucks]

The State of Colorado doesn’t participate in the Farmer’s Market Nutrition Program (FMNP)  or the Senior Farmer’s Market Nutrition Program, so we provide free Fresh Food Vouchers to Seniors, WIC participants, and SNAP recipients . Vouchers may be exchanged at our market booths or at our garden harvest days.

Food Donations

Our gardeners make regular donations of fresh, organic produce to the Real Food Bank in Crested Butte, to the Oaks Senior Center, Crested Butte and Gunnison Community Schools, Gunnison Community Center Senior Meals, the Vinotok Community Feast, and to groups or individuals in need. If you know of an institution, family, or individual who would like to receive fresh food donations, please contact us.

Backyard Harvest

Backyard Harvest connects people who are growing food in our community’s backyards with the people who need it most. Gardeners sign up to “grow a row” for the hungry, and bring a portion of their harvests to a central drop-off point. Volunteers assemble the many donations into food boxes, which are available for community pick up that afternoon, donated to local food pantries, and senior meals.
