WHY TEACH KIDS TO COOK?

Exposure to scratch cooking helps kids develop a mature palate and a taste for fresh, wholesome ingredients. The earlier kids become accustomed to nutritious foods, the less likely they will acquire a taste for processed foods.

Kids are much more likely to eat what they make. Is there anything more fun than eating your art project? Cooking creates a sense of ownership. When kids help in the kitchen there are fewer meal-time battles and more willingness to try new foods.

WHAT ABOUT BUYING LOCAL / ORGANIC ?

Kids Cook! supports and promotes buying local and organic, whenever possible.  Our efforts help boost the vitality and sustainability of our regional agriculture and local economy, introduce students to fresh locally grown food, help students understand "where food comes from" and encourages families to buy locally.

“Intro to Cooking”                      a first foray into baking and cooking basics                                                                                            .

A new class for our youngest aspiring chefs! At this age, it's more about the process than the end product. We get kids familiar with the kitchen, with reading and following a recipe, with basic cooking techniques, and with fresh, healthy ingredients. Appropriate cooking techniques for this age group include reading and following a recipe, spreading, assembling, tearing, pouring, measuring, stirring and mixing, and sprinkling. More experienced kids in this age group might also learn cutting with a sharper knife, cooking at the stovetop (sautéing, panfrying), operating small appliances like blenders and mixers, grating, etc. Most of all, we keep it fun and delicious! Parents are invited to the last class for the kids' presentation and a sampling of the session favorites.
