Our food security work is rooted in social justice.
But what does growing food have to do with racial equality?
We work in food security to empower those at a disadvantage to 1. Provide healthy food for themselves and their families, despite a food system that prioritizes big agriculture and big business. We want everyone to have access to fresh healthy food, and our communities of color are at a huge disadvantage from systematic racism deeply embedded into our society. 2. Growing food can provide financial freedom from larger corporations and empower real, small scale local farmers who believe in changing the food system. 3. Communities of color are statistically more adversely affected by health issues, and we can address the root of this problem by changing what we are eating and the food system as a whole.
The Gunnison Valley has a small but powerful community of color. Our community faces challenges of racial discrimination and we must work to serve and empower each and every one of them. Black lives matter. We urge you to come together to better our society, because we can’t stand for food justice until we stand for justice.
